What We Believe

The Town is undertaking a misguided effort to change zoning regulations in order to accommodate increasing pressure from real estate developers and others who would further commercialize our island at the expense of our fragile ecosystem and quality of life. Our aquifer is already imperiled by the increased expansion we’ve witnessed over the past several years, which has also created traffic congestion and parking problems.

We are concerned about the unintended consequences of a rush to implement changes on our island that are being driven primarily by economic priorities without thoughtful and informed consideration of the potential consequences. If not handled properly, these developments threaten our environment, health, quality of life and property values. We believe that, in order to save Shelter Island from the fate of the Hamptons and to protect the island we love, all of these factors must be considered and addressed through a deliberative and transparent process.
